SCLEROSIS CLINIC

Establishment With Grant (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 17. Financed by a grant from the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Society, a clinic has been established at Wellington Hospital to carry out a pilot research scheme into the incidence of the disease and of similar chronic nervous complaints In the Wellington and Hutt areas. Its aim is to discover the extent of disability in sufferers and to advise on possible treatment. In Canada and the United States there are multiple sclerosis societies with enormous financial assets which are carrying out research into the cause and cure of the disease. It was with the idea of extending research in the Southern Hemisphere that the Canadian society decided to give £2OOO to New Zealand. The money is being administered by the Wellington Medical Research Foundation and a Wellington neurologist is in charge of the clinic. The information collected will help the neurologist to report on the pattern of the disease in New Zealand and it is hoped that the research will then be extended to other parts of New Zealand and eventually to cover the whole country.
