HYDRAULIC MINING
Lower Costs Claimed (NT. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 17. The cost of coal to the consumer could be cut if up-to-date methods of mining and transport were introduced. Mr T. Moynihan, of Westport. a spokesman for the patentees of hydraulic mining, said tonight. “We could beat oil on costs,’’ he said. “Transporting by pipeline we could save 22s per ton in the Westport district.” Mr Moynihan said that a system of hydraulic mining had been introduced in New Zealand in 1924, but little advantage had been taken bf it. "We claim we can produce coal five times cheaper than by any other method in New Zealand, and if we can get a lease we can prove our claim.” v
