STATIONERY COSTS
Economies At Hospital
A committee of senior officers of the North Canterbury Hospital Board is being formed to advise the board on stationery and printing matters. The move was made as the result of a letter from the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) sent to all hospital boards asking them to keep a close watch on printing and stationery costs. Las: year, the Government issued a directive to all its departments to reduce their consumption of stationery and their general printing costs. Mr.McKay, in his letter to the hospital boards, said that, although he was not issuing a formal direction, he expected the boards to follow the Government’s example. He suggested that both sides of the paper should be used for letters or reports. Waste or poor-quality paper would do for file copies and letter drafts.
The secretary of the North Canterbury board (Mr J. G Laurenson) said reports could well be cyclostyled on both sides of the sheet, and in fact this was routine for the board's monthly agenda and reports. Any statement which might be quoted in law. however, should be confined to one side of the paper, and for .this reason he did not consider it a wise policy for both sides of the paper to be used in a letter sent out by an official body such as the board.
