SCHOOL STAFF AT MUSEUM

Deputation To Wellington

A deputation to the Director of Education <Mr A. E. Campbell) will ask for the urgent provision of extra staff in the Canterbury Museum schools' section. If no satisfaction is gained, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) will be approached This decision by the Museum Trust Board is the culmination of several years of written representations without result. In the meantime the museum has had to reject applications to take dozens of school classes. This month school services were confined to the classes which could be handled by the two education officers—mainly small country schools, special visits by North Island parties and others out of Christchurch, or special requests from post-primary schools.

“I estimate that, with an additional assistant, we could have coped with 50 classes which had to be excluded.” said Mr J. H. Johnston, the museum's senior education officer.
