REPERTORY PLAYS
“More Pot-Boilers Needed”
The Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society would have to produce more pot-boilers, plays with high box office appeal, said the chairman (Mr T. A. Kincaid) at the society's annual meeting. The society had not been formed as a money-making organisation, but it had to make some money to keep up its theatre. "We can't rely on our subscription plays alone,” said Mr Kincaid.
In the previous year the society produced six subscription plays. The losses on two of these were offset by the profits made on the others. An additional production of a popular nature. "Charley's Aunt." had earned a profit of £702. The best plays produced had not been the most financial, said Mr J. Erikson. He was delighted to see that the society’s prestige production, "Henry VIII." had made a profit, even if it was only £4 17s Bd. Officers for next year are: patron, Mr T. W. C. Tothill; president. Mr J. A. Hendry; vice-presidents. Mr A. F. Shaw and Mr H. Pointer; chairman, Mr T. A. Kincaid; committee, Mrs P. Hill. Mr J Wilson, Mrs B. Dingwall, Mr R. D. Neale. Mr N. Dolheguy, Mr J. Batstone, Mr R. Harvest and Mrs J. Simpson.
