SWIMMING FIVE RECORDS BROKEN AT GIRLS’ SCHOOL SPORTS

The surprise defeats of two Canterbury champions. Misses S. Pitama and W. Dale, and the successful return to competitive swimming of Miss S Nicholson after her operation for appendicitis last month were the highlights of the girls' secondary schools’ swimming sports, which were held at the Centennial Pool yesterday. The standard of swimming was remarkably high. Fresh records were established in five of the nine individual events and nine girls in all bettexed existing record

times. Miss Pitama (Cashmere High School), the Canterbury senior backstroke champion was convincingly beaten by Miss H Broughton (Girls' High School) in the senior backstroke event, and Miss Dale (Linwood High School) lost the intermediate freestyle by a touch to Miss L Cox (Cashmere High School) Miss Dale beat Miss Cox for the Canterbury junior championship over the same distance. 55 yards, in January. Miss Nicholson's swimming showed little evidence of her enforced rest, and she was clearly the fastest competitor at the sports. After a comfortable warm-up swim in 34.75ec in the heats she displayed splendid form in the final retaining the title she won last year and breaking her own secondary schools' record by o.4sec. Her time was 31.9 sec In a heat of the senior backstroke event. Miss Pitama clipped a fifth of a second from the record, only to have her new mark shattered by Miss Broughton in the final. The Girls’ High School swimmer recorded 37.25ec, and Miss Pitama. with 37.95ec. also surpassed her time in the heat of 38.3 sec.

The Avonside Girls High School champion, Miss C. Hopper, the Canterbury senior record-holder and titleholder for women’s breaststroke. twice broke the record for the senior event in her style. She bettered the existing time by 2.2 sec in a heat, and reduced it by a further o.2sec in the final. The closest encounter of the sports was that between Misses Cox and Dale in the intermediate freestyle. Miss Dale appeared to have a slight advantage in the early stages, but Miss Cox’s long, powerful stroke carried her to victory by a touch. Both girls were timed at 32.55ec to break the record—which Miss Cox had equalled in the heats—by half a second There was an unusual occurrence in the third heat of the junior breaststroke event when the first three swimmers all bettered the existing record of 47.55ec. The winner. Miss L. Blackett (Girls’ High School) recorded 441 sec. Miss S. Woods (St Margaret’s), 47sec. and Miss L. Marshall (Mairehau High School), 47.35ec. Miss

• Blackett, the Canterbury 1 junior breaststroke champion. again beat the pld record in the final, but her time was not as fast as that in the heat. The contest for most points was close.
