DUTIES OF J.P.’S
Use Wherever Possible (N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 7. “It is my policy to make use of the services of justices wherever it is appropriate to do so.” said the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) this morning, in opening the annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Justices' Associations. Mr Hanan emphasised file importance of the task undertaken by Justices, who preside over 'preliminary, hearings in the Magistrate’s Courts. “When a charge has been laid it is the responsibility of the Court conducting the preliminary hearing, to decide whether there is sufficient evidence to justify the accused being brought before the Supreme Court. "I appeal to all of you to bear in mind always the serious nature of this part of your work, and to ensure that you do not send any person on to the Supreme Court without sufficient evidence against him to justify the committal."
