Buka Island Convictions

(X Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BOHANO (Solomon Islands), March 6. A total of 588 convictions were recorded against natives of Buka Island in the Austra-lian-administered Solomons during a special six-day court hearing which ended yesterday. The Magistrate, Mr R. E. Ormsby, SM, imposed prison sentences or fines on 306 natives for riotous behaviour, 272 for obstructing the police, eight for evading taxes and two for escaping custody. The natives were arrested following clashes on February 6 and February 19 between Buka Island villagers end Papua-New Guinea administration police who had been sent to the Hahalis area to enforce payment of the Annual £2 head tax.
