Tourist’s Complaint

Sir, —I think your Australian critic is being a trifle captious. To take her points in turn. New Zealand has no monopoly of dusty roads in this hemisphere. I remember a hair-raising journey in Western Australia where a gravel surface caused our car (with a local driver) to' skid into a ditch, while later on we administered first aid to a couple whose vehicle, for the same reason, had hit a tree. The last suitcase of mine to be ruined by mishandling met its fate at Tilbury. but it did not occur to me to demand compensation from the Port of London Authority. Opinions of taxidrivers must necessarily derive from personal experience. I have always found Christchurch ones helpful and obliging, with no thought for the tips which are an integral part of taxihire in other countries. Neither have I found them extortionate, though the general charge is perhaps rather high.—Yours, etc, ENGLISHWOMAN. February 28, 1962.
