ADDINGTON MARKET Store Sheep Values Show Some Recovery

Last week’s easier trend was checked and, for the most part, recovered in the store sheep and lamb sale at Addington Market today, reflecting the break in the weather. While more rain is needed throughout the province to bring autumn growth in pastures away, falls in the last few days have been very welcome for greenfeed crops. A bigger gallery followed the sale.

Wether lamb quality was not as good as last week but there was a better tone to the store lamb market and good demand ruled for average to good quality lines. Several pens of good fine-wool ewe lambs were forward and sold well.

Two-tooth ewes met a sound sale with Romneys to 65s and fine-wools to 575. An outstanding line of 1350 halfbreds from the Bluff Station (Kekerengu) averaged 51s Bd—the complete dispersal of the station two-tooth flock. Fine-wools generally met an improved market

Older ewes met a sound sale fully firm on last week with the top four-year Corriedales selling to 465. There were very few wethers.

The offering of store sheep and Jambs totaled 21.468 head, eotnpared with 22.269 last week, and included 5452 store taenba (8653 last week), 4561 trwo-tooth ewes (3631), 11,390 older ewes (0756) and 65 wethers (229). STORK LAMBS The store lamb entry was smaller at 5452 head, compared with 8653 last week, and quality was by no means as good with a large proportion of small and secondary sorts included. After last week’s easier trend for all but the best lambs, there was a good sound sale which looked to show some recovery tn values, although this was not marked. A big gallery followed the sale and there was a good inquiry for all classes. There were not many top quality lambs in the market and this helped increase competition on the average to good lines. There were a few more finewool ewe lambs but only two or three pens of Romneys and. apart from a few select pens which sold quite well, quality was again not very good and most of the plainer sorts made about the same as comparable wether lambs.

The best of the fine-wool wether lambs sold from 30s to 355, with average to good at 21s fid to 29s fid and others at 15s to 20s. Good Romney and Romney cross made 26s to 295. with average at 21s fid to 25s and others at 14s to 20s. Average to good Down lambs sold from 21s fid to 275. with small and plain at 15s fid to 20s. For fine-wool ewe lambs the beet realised 36s to 425, with good at 30s to 335. average at 23s to 27a fid and others at 12s to 21s.

TWO-TOOTH EWES Last week’s easing was recovered in the two-tooth ewe sale and there was a good firm sale. Some very good Romneys were forward, although perhaps not quite as good as the tops last week, and there were several lines of particularly good fine-wools. The entry was bigger at 4561 head, compared with 3631 last week, but there was quite a good gallery following the «ale. The feature of the market was a big line of 1350 halfbreds from the Bluff Station (Kekerengu) which represented a full dispersal of the station's two-tooth flock and these ranged from 44s to 56s at an average of 51s 8d a head, a good sale for a notable line of 'sheep. Two trucks were sold at 56s and four trucks in two sales at 55s with two more trucks at 53s fid. Many of these sheep were bought by farmers south of the Rakaia river.

Compared with last week, when the top price for finewool two-tooths was only 48s, nearly a third of the fine-wools offered made 50s or better, With the top sale at 575. The Romneys also met a sound sale throughout with the tops making to 655. Average to good quality two-tooths, particularly finewools in the 42s to 49s price range, looked to be selling very well.
