DICKENS’S BIRTHDAY
Dinner Held By Fellowship The Christchurch branch of the Dickens Fellowship recently honoured the onehundred and fiftieth anniversary of Charles Dickens's birthday with a dinner party held at the Sign of the Takahe. About 100 members and their friends attended. Dr. R. A. Copland, senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury, gave an address on Dickens's attitude to religion and the Church. Proposing a toast to the memory of Dickens, Mr H. Cordery gave a summary of the social conditions and political events of the writer's time, illustrating how his novels had penetrated to the depth of the English ecene. Mrs J. O'Sullivan read excerpts from "David Copperfield,” and vocal items were given by Miss V. Martin. Mrs D. W. MacDonald presided.
