Golf 21-STROKE WIN
A. Palmer At Phoenix (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PHOENIX (Arizona), February 11. A. Palmer won the 35.009dollar Phoenix Open by 21 strokes today. His final round cf 66, five under par. gave him a 15 under par total of 260 for the 72 holes, the Associated Press reported. The victory made Palmer the first double winner of the American winter tour. He came first in the Palm Springs classic only a week ago. Palmer also won the title at Phoenix last year. The win brought him 5300 dollars, to make his career total 275.754 dollars. Only two other golfers have earned more from the game.
There was a four-way tie for second place, between R. McAllister. W. Casper, D. Fairfield and the national amateur champion J. Nicklaus. at 281.
“My driving was by far the greatest reason 1 for the big margin.” Palmer’’ sail!. “And those long irons came through for me several times.” His wood shots from the tee consistently reached the 300-vard ' mark. and he missed the fairways only a half-dozen times in four days.
Palmer, explaining that he ‘ needs a little rest," plans to skip the next two tournaments at Tucson and New Orleans.
