Speed-Boat Racing ATOM XI WINS N.Z. TITLE
Championship At Porirua A. B. Johnson, a member of the New Brighton Power Boat Club, won the New Zealand 75 cub. in. V-bottom championship in Atom XI at Wellington Speedboat Club’s regatta on Porirua Harbour on Saturday. Atom XI, powered with a Ford 10 h.p. engine, with Elva head, won the six-lap race over a triangular five’'ghths of a mile course 3v about 300 yards. Autogo 'Mr Hudson), of Kaponga. was second, and Sez-U <F. E Finucane) of Whakatane, was third. Autogo won the championship race last year, when it was held at New Plymouth.
The water was choppy and the championship was a hard race. Johnson judged the rolling start exceptionally well and got the drop on the other seven starters. He led all the way, but had to handle his craft with care On several occasions, the boat became airborne on the sea. ward leg of the course. Johnson has been racing speedboats for 30 years. It is his first New Zealand title His was the only South Island boat in the championship this year. Johnson has now raced 11 boats, each one named Atom, and is preparing a twelfth craft, to be called Atom XII, for racing next season.
