Murder Inquiries In Central Otago
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Feb. 11.
Investigations into the bomb parcel murder of Mr J. P. Ward switched to Central Otago today, when Detective Chief Inspector G. W. Alty and other senior detectives left the city at 5 a.m. But tonight Mr Alty “had nothing to report.”
Mr Alty expects that the scientific experts and detectives should finish their investigations in Mr J. P. Ward’s office later this week, but until then the office will be guarded night and day. Today’s inquiries in Central Otago were not the first investigations made outside the city. Earlier, detectives visited the Seacliff Hospital, where inquiries were made about former patients. The police dog, Arko, with his handler. Constable J. J. Orlowski, kept vigil in the Security Buildings. Stuart street, at the week-end. The 24-hour watch on the premises will be maintained until the police and scientific inquiries have been completed in Mr Ward’s offices. The homicide squad, under the direction of Detective Senior-Sergeant A I. Knapp, of New Plymouth, has set up temporary headquarters at the Dunedin Criminal Investigation Branch and the entire squad supplemented
where necessary by Dune-
din detectives, is working from early morning until late at night. Mr Alty said the police expected that hoax bomb parcels would appear, but to date, only one of these, posted to the Commercial Trading Company in Maclaggan
street, has been reported.
