Clergy At Cricket The Anglican Bishop of Auckland. Bishop E. A. Gowing. led a clergymen’s cricket side against a young Anglicans’ team from All Saints' Parish, Ponsonby, on Saturday afternoon. The clergymen who represented the Auckland diocese, used the game as a “practice run” for their match against Waikato clergy on February 19. Saturday's game was played at the Avondale racecourse.—(PA.) No Hedge-Hopper A man with a red and white balloon harnessed to his back charged a hedge at the Christchurch International Airport on Saturday. He leapt and ended up in the hedge. Not enough gas was the verdict. Officials at the weather office said the man was making his first attempt at the Continental sport of hedge-hopping. He hoped to introduce the sport to New Zealand. Cloud Of Midges A large smoke-like cloud of insects hovered over some trees in Hagley Park near Park terrace last evening. Mr E. G. Turbott, assistant curator of the Canterbury Museum, said that it was probably a swarm of the common midge. They were a common sight over Lake Ellesmere, but it was unusual to see such a swarm in the city. Raising Funds The North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association has decided upon a novel plan for raising funds for the running of its centennial show. Because of drought "cast for age” ewes are going begging this year and the association has decided to ask each of its members to graze three such ewes for it in the coming year. The ewes will be purchased by the association at the cheap rates ruling at present and the meat and wool from the ewe and the progeny will be the property of the association. The association will arrange with the Inland Revenue Department to pay the tax required on the transactions.—(P.A.) Uses For Ferries The North Shore Ferry Company had received several inquiries from people interested in buying ferry boats not in current use, the managing director, Mr L. S Dromboole, said yesterday. One family wanted to buy a ferry to use as a houseboat on Lake Taupo and another prospective buyer wanted to convert a ferry into a home on land.—(P.A.)
