ATHLETICS Six Canterbury Records Fall At Rugby Park

Six provincial records—tliree of them senior—were established after arduous and intensive competition on the first day of the Canterbury athletic championships at Rugby Park on Saturday. Conditions were in the competitors’ favour. The track was familiar and sun and wind combined to assist the athletes in their record and near recordbreaking endeavours.

Performances in the womens section suffered through the absence of Mrs V. Young and Misses M. A M. Chamberlain and L. Anderson, who were with the New Zealand team competing against Australia for the Trans-Tasman Cup at Dunedin; but the over-all standard in all sections was very good. This time the men shared the glory. R. Stevens, of University, was the first in the limelight when he bettered the six-mile record of 29min 36.8 sec with a time of 29min 23.25ec. The record was an ambition, certainly, but if the spectators had known Stevens had had a 10-mile jaunt the night before his time would not have been among the possibilities envisaged for Saturday

Stevens won the race in ■his own inimitable fashion, ‘clearing out from the field I in the final stages and quickening his very short stride until one could be excused for thinking he was sprinting. D. Reece (Technical), jwho has distinguished himi self with some courageous traces this season, was second . by about 300 yards in 30min jssec, and B. Curie was as far behind for third in 30min 30 4sec. Pole Vault The senior pole vault, which calls for as much patience as stamina, was another triumph for C. Stricke (University), who pushed the height to 13ft %in, beating his own official record by 734 in, a very commendable effort indeed. Stricke vaulted smoothly, with a confident, clear-cut technique which only occasionally deserted him at the more exacting heights. The javelin events showed great depth, each of the winners in the men's sections throwing near-record and record distances. D Wightman (Ashburton), in the under-17, bettered the standard of 160 ft by 13ft 4L£in and thus will have this distance recognised as the provincial record. M G Stewart (Waimate) hurled the junior jave[line 208 ft 7in. which bettered the official national record of M Speden by 3in; but Stew-

art has a greater distance of 227 ft 7in awaiting ratification. In the senior section R. G. Ball (University) threw 212 ft. only Ift less than the distance he threw last Saturday at the Agfa meeting. The senior University relay team of D. Mackenzie. J. Geoghegan, D. Davison and A. G. Steel, in that order, raced around the four by 110 yards track in 42.95ec beating the record of 43.25ec. established by University in 1960. With such a formidable team it was not surprising that the record was lowered, but speed alone did not bring success. The baton changing, a task which has often upset the best of teams, was carried out with cool skill and this polished technique undoubtedly contributed towards the new time.

Junior 100 Yards Geoghegan. who won the junior 100 yards in the respectable time of 10.4 sec, was a member of the junior University relay team which equalled the record of 45sec, established by Christ’s College in 1959 and High School in 1960. A quarter-miler ot some ability, B. Sheard (High School) ran his single lap m the under-17 race at a furious pace, which produced a new record time of 52.55ec, o.2sec better than his own record.

Records apart, there were some very fine performances, not the least being the grand mile of the junior, G. Pyne (Technical). Last Saturday, Pyne, in an attack on the New Zealand record of 4min 12sec. just failed by a second to establish new figures and his second attempt on Saturday, although another gallant effort, also failed, this time by 2.6 sec. Pyne's first lap time of 67sec was perhaps his downfall for he never made up the arrears in the next three laps. As last week, Pyne was out on his own after the field had settled down and in many ways it was unfortunate that he did not have the benefit of some assistance in the first half-mile.

The senior mile was another wonderful race and a personal achievement for J. D. Macdonald (University), who won his first title over this distance, after several years of near misses. Macdonald won in 4min llsec, only o.ssec outside K. Williams’s record, but it was his manner of winning which had greater significance. Broke Away

Macdonald broke away from his close rival, B Smith (Technical). with 220 yards to go and Smith, who has the ability to stay with most in the final drive, unaccountably fell back and so lost his chance for the title For Macdonald drove himseif to a sprint which Smith could not adequately answer and the University runner won convincingly by 10 yards or more. The most interesting feature in the women’s events was the time given for Miss K. Crowell (Westport) in the under-16 75 yards. Miss Crowell, aged 12. won this race in a blanket finish and when It was announced that she had equalled Miss M. Jackson's senior national record of B.3sec there were some murmurings tn the crowd that here was another Snell, younger perhaps, but obviously a runner of tremendous potential.

One or two officials, wondering a little at this amazing time, went and inspected the course and to everyone's sorrow it was found that the race had been run from the 80 metres hurdle start, and so was some 12 yards short of ”5 yards So the race was run again and Miss Crowell won in 9.2 sec

In some ways Miss Crowell was fortunate to reach the final In her heat she had been unplaced, but many thought she was a clear second. So after much consultation she was allowed by the referee (Mr E Lunn) to take her place in the final.

A little while later the junior 1500 metres steeplechase, a new event, was held and through an error the race was found to be too long by some 30 yards.
