N.Z. Girls Fall A Point Behind In Cup Contest
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Feb. 10. New South Wales gained a surprsing but narrow lead over New Zealand in the women’s athletics match for the R. H. North Trans-Tas-man Cup at the Caledonian ground on Saturday. Each side scored two wins but N.S.W. edged ahead on an unofficial points basis of 16-15 by gaining slightly better place performances. A brilliant finish by R Scott (N.S.W.) edged D Porter (Auckland) out of the 100 yards honours. R. Chapman (N.S.W.) was third and N Bond (N.Z.) fourth
The four girls flashed across the line with only a stride between them after Miss Scott had unleashed a dynamic burst from halfway which her opponents could not quite match. The first two were timed at 107 sec and the second two at 10.8 sec. However, a strong following wind prevented Miss Porter equalling her New Zealand record.
Comfortable wins by experienced Canterbury and New Zealand champions. V Young (shot put) and M Chamberalin (half - mile), kept New Zealand in the fight. The excessive margins by which Mrs Young and Miss Chamberlain won their events were matched by Australian and British Empire pentathlon record-holder. H Frith, who outclassed Canterbury's L. Anderson in the long jump. The match concludes at Auckland on Saturday. Results:—
100 Yards —R Scott (NSW) 1. D Porter (N Z.) 2, R Chapman (NSW) 3. N. Bond (N.Z) 4. Time. 10.7
Long Jump—H. Frith (NSW.) 1, L. Anderson (NZ.i 2. Distance. 19:7}. 880 Yards.—M. Chamberlain (N.Z.) 1, J. Stapleton (N S W.) 2. Time. 2:9.1.
Shot Put—V. Young (N.Z.) 1. B. Williams (NS W,) 2. Distance, 52:7}.
