UNIVERSITY PLANS

Wide Interest In Country

The University of Canterbury is delighted with the interest shown in its students’ union building appeal by provincial local bodies.

The university council believed that the whole of its district should be interesetd in the university. But, as many country areas have had little association with the faculties on the campus (apart from sending country students) because they are remote, the reaction to the appeal was uncertain. In the event, the majority of the local bodies have made contributions. They include councils at Levels. Halswell, Mt. Herbert, Westport, Waipara, Cheviot. Timaru. Kaiapoi, Temuka. Riccarton, Lyttelton. Wairraairi, Westland. Greymouth. Paparua. Grey, Rangiora (borough and county), and Christchurch. The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall said that the university was grateful for the contributions made by the councils to the appeal but even more gratified by the interest evident.

As an appreciation of all this and as a start of an effort to keep the university more closely in touch with provincial areas, the university had invited representatives of the contributing local bodies with their wives to meet members of the university council and the professorial board with their wives on the afternoon of February 13. The visitors will be shown interesting features of the central site (there will not be time on this occasion to go to Ham) and they will then be guests of the university at a short reception.
