FATHER OF SIX STOLE £1041
“Hard Up And Had No Money” (N.Z. Press Association) TAUMARUNUI, Feb. 9. Harold Victor Carr, of Raurimu, married, with six children, was placed on probation for 12 months at the Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of stealing £ 1041 from the Taumarunui railway booking office on Thursday night. February 8.
It was stated that the accused was the only person tn the foyer of the station. He watched the booking clerk counting money which was left on a table while the booking clerk went on other business after locking the door. Accused squeezed his hand under a window and opened the door to obtain the money which was mostly in cheques, only £l4 2s 6d being in cash
The police were called and they traced him to a taxi car and recovered all but £1 of the money. Accused. who pleaded guilty, told Mr B. S. Barry, S.M.. he was hard up and had no money to keep his cnildren. The Magistrate said that under the circumstances, with a wife and six children to keep, he could not send accused to prison.
