New Car Freight Rates For Steamer Express

As from May 1 this year, the larger a motorist’s car, the more he will have to pay for it to be shipped by the steamer express between Lyttelton and Wellington and Wellington and Picton. Announcing the new basis for assessing freight charges on motor vehicles shipped, and accompanied by passengers on the steamer expresses, the Union Steam Ship Company says that from May 1 the freights will be charged on the basis of overall length instead of by cubic measurement as at present. “In the over-all effect, there is no increase in the basic freight rate, though there are minor variations from previous rates in the charges for indirect vehicles, some being a few shillings less, some more.

“This variation is because of the compression of 15 grades of charges under the present system to four in the new arrangement,” the company says.

All charges will continue to be collected at the time of making a booking and will include freight, wharfage, handling and harbour improvement rate.

The new categories under which freight will be assessed, are: cars up to lift; over lift and up to 13ft 6in; over 13ft 6in and up to 15ft; over 15ft and up to 17ft 6in; and with a pro rata charge for length in excess of 17ft 6in.
