Three At Cust With Hepatitis

Three cases of infective hepatitis in children at Cust, reported to the Christchurch health office on Thursday, bad brought the total number of confirmed cases there during the last two months to 11. the medical officer of health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said yesterday. The disease was reaching epidemic proportions in the district, he said.

New patients reported with the disease at Cust in the last fortnight were girls of eight and 10 and boys of 12 and 14.

Up to Thursday, six new cases had been reported in the Christchurch health district this week, he said. Last week, 14 cases were notified.

Persons in country areas were probably now more susceptible to infective hepatitis than city residents because the latter were more likely to have been in contact with carriers of the disease and so to have gained some immunity against it.
