BRIGHT OBJECT SEEN IN SKY

‘’Probably A Small Meteorite”

A bright object, seen lowin the sky by many persons in Canterbury and Westland on Friday evening was probably a slow meteorite according to Mr C S. L. Keay lecturer in physics at the University of Canterbury. It was described by most people as being conical with a red nose-tip and a white sparkling tail. The crew of the motor ship Picton. on it's way from Wellington to Lyttelton, sighted the object off Kaikoura at 8.17 p.m. about 15 degrees above the horizon and travelling on a perfectly straight course from west to east. The object took five seconds to pass from sight It was this report that definitely placed the object as a slow meteorite rather than a satellite, said Mr Keay.
