RETURN TO HAREWOOD
Soviet Planes In Antarctic
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. January 8. The two Soviet aircraft which are now in the Antarctic will land at Harewood on their return journey to Russia later this month. A spokesman for the Soviet Legation at Wellington, said today that the planes would arrive in New Zealand between January 15 and 20. The present experimental flights are understood to have been successful, and arrangements are expected to be made so that three similar flights will be made yearly, using the facilities already available at Hare wood. The Department of External Affairs, which will handle any agreement between New Zealand and Russia on air transport, has not yet had any advice of further flights. The Ilyushin 18 turbo-prop airliner and the Antonov 10 transport will not arrive at Harewood together. Their work in the Antarctic has been very different, and the Antonov, at present supplying widely separated parties, will have to be converted back from skis to wheels before it leaves the Antarctic. This will be done at the Russian base at Mirnv.
