Air Pollution

Sir, —In reply to the letter by “W,” I would like to point out that the residents of Opawa and Waltham are not all woolly minded. If he lived close to the shunting yards here I would wager he would not be so ready to write sarcastic remarks about other unfortunate humans who are forced to breathe the smoke belching out practically all day and night from the steam shunting locomotives. “W” says it is quite childish to prate about the small quantity of air pollution that emanates from industry. Let him come and live near the Linwood shunting yards.—Yours, etc., OPAWA. WAKE UP. January 8, 1962.

Sir, —Those interested in defending or perpetuating industrial, factory or other outdoor source of air pollution draw a red herring by directing attention to another culprit, the cigarette. Those defending the nicotine weed have blamed smog. What of the unfortunate sufferer between two stools, with blame for trouble as serious as lung cancer shifting from one to the other? When will anything be done in Christchurch for protection from hazard or in relief of sufferers likely to fall victim to respiratory troubles from any smoke or fume cause?— Yours, etc., HEALTH AND CLEAR SKY. January 8, 1962.
