GOOD BOWLING BY COLTS
Combined Side Out For 88
“The Press" Special Service MORRINSVILLE. Jan. 8.
Accurate bowling by B. Taylor and the spinner M. Lester, was largely instrumental in the Canterbury Brabin Cup team succeeding in dismissing a combined Matamata-Morrins-ville cricket team for 88 here today. G. Sutherland and I. McNicol were the only batsmen to show confidence against the Canterbury attack. The visitors’ fielding was excellent with M. Ryan taking a brilliant catch in the slips to dismiss L. Thompson. L. Smith, keeping wickets in place of J. Baird who left thp team at Te Awamutu, gave nothing away and allowed only two byes. Against an accurate, but not hostile, attack Canterbury lost its first five wickets for 73, mainly through careless batting but a good innings of 66 by Smith saved the side. C. Reid and Taylor provided some of the best batting of the day when they added 41 quick runs for the ninth wicket. Scores: MorrlnsviUe - Matamata first innings 88 (G. Sutherland 32, I. McNicol 21; B. Taylor five for 15, M. Lester four for 32, M. Ryan one for 4). Canterbury, first innings 187 (L. Smith 06, C. Reid 41, B. Taylor 15, G. Beere 13, J. Logie 12; B. Brooks three for 49. A. Franich two for 41, I. McNicol three for 46).
