W. A. HADLEE TO CAPTAIN TEAM AGAINST FIJIANS
The former New Zealand captain, W. A. Hadlee, will lead the Canterbury team in its two-day match against the Fijians at Lancaster Park, beginning on Friday. Hadlee has not played for Canterbury for 10 years, although he has been, season after season, one of the most successful batsmen in club cricket.
His selection as captain has been made at the wish of A. R. Mac Gibbon, the present Canterbury captain, and the cricket public will agree that the gesture MacGibbon has made is welcome and warranted. The chairman of the Canterbury Cricket Association's management committee (Mr J. T. Eltoft) issued the following statement on the selection yesterday afternoon: “The selection of W. A. Hadlee as captain was made only because of the express wish of A. R. Mac Gibbon, Canterbury’s appointed captain for the season. The management committee recognises a fine gesture and has agreed to the appointment for this match.”
The Canterbury team will be:—
W. A. Hadlee (captain) B. A. Bolton J. H. M. Dawson A. G. Duckmanton D. L. Gallop B. G. Hadlee I. R. Hartland B. F. Hastings D. Hill J. Kiddey A. R. Mac Gibbon D. J. McKendry (twelfth man). The wicket-keeper will be Hill
Two changes have been made in the Canterbury team which will play Central Districts at Nelson, beginning on January 18. K.
Thomson and P. Truscott have been dropped, and they have been replaced by B. F Hastings and I. R. Hartland. The 12 players for the match are: Mac Gibbon (captain), Bolton. Dawson, Duckmanton, J. E. England, Gallop, B. G. Hadlee, Hartland, Hastings, Hill, Kiddey, McKendry.
