RACING Kurow Cup To Brown Watch

DUNEDIN, January 7. Brown Watch confirmed consistent form since being recommissioned when he won the Kurow Cup decisively, the feature event at the Kurow Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. Brown Watch was first choice on the doubles machine, but Last Link, winner of the Gillies Hack Handicap, was not in demand and the combination paid £46 16s 6d for £l. Brown Watch was a firm favourite on all the machines. A six*year«old gelding by Thnanova, he is trained at Oamaru by J. C. Hobbs for his Southland owner, Mr R. C. McKenzie.

Brown Watch wm ridden by W. D. Skelton. Brown Watch won the December mile at the Dunedin Christmas meeting and was a close fourth in the Waikouaiti Cup. On Saturday he advanced in favour when the early Favourite, Personify, was withdrawn from the race.

A member of M. J. Wadley’s team at Riccarton, Last Link, wm ridden by N. T. Cowlee. He was fourth favourite and paid £lO 17s to win.

In a total doubles pool of £10,543, including £1859 10s on-course, Brown Watch carried 6184 10s tickets. He was followed by Matauwhi (5140) and Safe Harbour (2307).

Leslie Bell dominated the betting in the second leg with 4965 5s tickets. Master Main was second favourite with 764 tickets. LMt Link carried 576 tickets. The weather was fine and hot, and the track, affected by overnight rain, quickly dried out. The totalisaitor on-course handled £18.799 10s, including £1859 10s on the double, compared with £31.492 5s last year when the club raced at Oamaru. First Leg Royal Chant and Flaxman disputed the lead running into the back straight, two lengths clear, of Safe Harbour and Matauwhi, with Brown Watch in a gap ahead of Ocean Melody, Canon and Royal George. Flaxman was clear at the five and going to the half mile was two lengths ahead of Matauwhi and Royal Chant. Brown Watch closed on Flaxman near the furlong and then drew out to win by half a length from Matauwhi. Safe Harbour came home well for third a length and a half back with a length to Canon

and half a length to Royal George. FLoanan was close up next, clear of Royal Chant and Ocean Melody last Last Link Wins Last Link, having his second start in a fresh preparation, fought on well to beat the third favourite, Corrieonzo, in the Gillies Hack Handicap. Jimmy Hill disputed the pace with Great Heights and Chaud Froid running to the six furlongs where Black Simper was next ahead of Vienna Woods, Last Link, Lightning Girl. High Score and Munster King. Corrieonxo. one of the tailenders, moved up smartly to follow Jimmy Hill into the straight where Last Link and Vienna Woods were next and Leslie Bell was Showing up wide out. Last Link and Corrieonzo ran clear with Last Link getting in the deciding stride. High Score made ground for third two lengths back. There was a head then to Vienna Woods with Lightning Girl and Rustle almost in line ahead of Leslie Bell, Lyn Leigh, Black Simper, Master Main, Munster King, Great Heights, Chaud Froid and Jimmy Hill.
