RUGBY IN PAPUA

Enthusiasm For Game

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 7.

Papuans thought Rugby such a better and more internationally popular game than Australian rules hitherto played, that last year they decided to “go Rugby.” This was reported today by the president of the Papuan Rugby Union Association (Mr Mauri Kiki). With his wife he ts en route from Western Samoa where he had been attending the independence celebrations as a member of the Australian delegation representing Papua and New Guinea.

This coming season will be the first of the new code in Papua. Thirteen teams will take part in the competition.

Mr Kiki, who is a pathologist at Port Moresby's general hospital and is president of the hospital team, expressed the hope that it would not be long before a Papuan Rugby team could exchange visits with Maoris. Fijians, Samoans and Tongans.

He is a fan of the Fijian style of play, seen in New Zealand, as well as the Maori style, seen in Fiji. Mr and Mrs Kiki leave for Sydney by air tomorrow night.
