A. Hyslop’s Success (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 7. Last year’s ‘‘Driver to Europe.” A. Hyslop, a 82-year-old Hastings sheepfarmer, drove a fine race to win the Ardmore championship for New Zealand drivers at Ardmore on Saturday. He drove his 2.5 litre Cooper Climax at speeds of up to 138.4 miles an hour to gain a 5.6 seconds win from P Hoare, of Christchurch, in a 3 litre Ferrari. The race was held in perfect conditions, and it gave Hyslop his first major win in this country. J. Mansel drove a CooperMaserati into third place several hundred yards behind Hoare. He challenged Hyslop once, but his car could not take the strain and he had to be content with following the two leaders. Hyslop and Hoare were both timed at 138.4 miles an hour on the back straight. Manse! reached 133.3 miles an hour. Hyslop’s fastest lap was Imin 22.65ee (87 miles an hour) and Hoare’s was Imin 22.95ec (86 miles an hour).
