M The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, January 4. Two Christchurch glider pilots, R. Goulden and W. Peuntner, gained one stage of the Silver C award, the flight of five-hour duration, from the Frankton aerodrome this week. The Silver C award consists of three stages. The first is a flight of five hours, the second a cross-country flight of 32 miles, and the third a height gain of 3200 ft above the height of launching. Any two of these can be gained In the one flight. The two pilots, with their nigh - performance two-seater Slingsby Eagle, and spent a few days at the aerodrome with members of the Otago Glider Club and their six gliders. This Slingsby Eagle glider and the one owned by the Otago club, are the only two of their type in the country. Excellent gliding conditions In the Remarkables have been experienced by the pilots. Goulden flew the Otago club’s Slingsby T3l training machine to a height of 7000 feet. P. Renshaw, of the Otago club, flew the Skylark 118 to 15,000 ft. and the club president, J. Hanlon. flew the same glider to 7100 ft in 16 minutes from take-off, being released at 1200 ft.
He also flew the Skylark round the 35-mile triangle, Queenstown - Staircase creek-Arrowtown-Queenstown, in Ihr 26min from take-off at Frankton to touch-down at Frankton. The Christchurch machine returned to Omarama on Tuesday.
