MAINTENANCE OF MINES
Managers To Work
Maintenance work at the Strongman and Liverpool State coal mines will be carried out by the managers until the regular maintenance workers are able to take over again, the district manager, State Coal Mines, Greymouth (Mr J. W. Glendinning) said yesterday. It was agreed between the men and the management on Tuesday that the men should not carry out the
maintenance until a doctor was available in the district, as the work was considered too dangerous. "Most of the work is In keeping the pumps attended," said Mr Glendinning. "We shall all take a turn, and in this way we should get through all right.” He expected that the men would resume the day after the doctor arrived. Ordinary work at the mines is at a standstill for the annual holidays Dr. P. W. Martin, who had fallen sick in Christchurch on his way to take up the Runanga special area practice, which includes medical supervision of the mines, would probably start work on Monday, the Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said yesterday. Dr. Jepson also announced that Dr. C. C. Skelton had been appointed to the special area Of Brunnerton in succession to Dr. H. F. Drake. Until Dr. Skelton took up his practice on January 16, Dr. Martin would give some of his time to the area, when Dr. Skelton arrived there would be practitioners in all the special area posts on the West Coast.
