RAILWAY GOODS TRAFFIC
More Now Moved By Diesel (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. For the first time in the history of the New Zealand Railways, diesel locomotives are moving substantially more goods traffic than steam locomotives. Tipping the scales finally in favour of diesel traction was the placing in service in August and September of 12 of the more powerful D class dieselelectric locomotives. Traffic returns for the four weeks ended October 7 show that diesel locomotives moved ( 136,300.000 gross ton-miles in ( freight service, compared with 123,000,000 gross ton- ■ miles moved by steam locomotives.
