Friday Shopping
Sir, —Is there any particular reason for the frenzy of household shopping, notably groceries, that takes place every Friday? There are four, and a bit more, other days in the week on which a housewife should be able to replenish' the commisariat, and with all the refrigeration available there can hardly be any question of perishable commodities deteriorating if they have to be kept for a few days. One can spent a lot of time on a Friday waiting to be served in some grocery establishment, with two or at most three attendants trying to cope with the situation, and one of them being constantly called to the telephone to take down orders for delivery. If the shop also sells ice-cream and roft drinks periodical incursions of young folk add to the general congestion. Only the dogs, who have to stay outside anyway, can really enjoy the experience.—Yours, etc., DIES IRAE. November 27, 1961.
