POISONING THAR
Bait Dropped From Air
Because of bad weather the second airdrop of poisoned carrots to control thar in the Ben Ohau and Murchison ranges by the Forest Service was not nearly so successful as the first one. Fifty tons of carrots poisoned with 1080 were dropped from planes on to areas ranging from 5000 ft to 8000 ft in height, It is considered that deer are unlikely to be affected when the bait is spread at those heights. There was a heavy fall of snowafter the carrots were dropped this time, and the thar were driven to lower levels. “The trial poisoning in the Mount Cook area was carried out last year and was so successful—there being an 80 per cent, kill—that we repeated it,” said Mr C. O. Bridgman, senior forest ranger, Canterbury conservancy. "However, the weather was against us this time. Thar are destroy-
ing alpine vegetation and critical ground cover in large catchment areas.”
