Shut-Out Win By Monowai In the first round of the Canterbury Softball Association’s senior championship since the regrading of Monowai B and Teachers’ College, played on Saturday, Christchurch had little difficulty in beating a disrupted Hagley team while Monowai recorded a shut-out win against Kaiapoi.
The Monowai B and Teachere’ College teams have been placed in a new grade of senior reserve, which also includes the top four teams from the intermediate grade, Sockburn, Spreydon, Vanguard and West Old Giris. Senior softball will not be played next Saturday because of the representative match between Canterbury and Otago. The game will be watched by Mr G. Marshall, the New Zealand sole selector. Results of senior matches on Saturday were:— Christchurch 14, Hagley 4. Monowai 9, Kaiapoi 9. Christchurch ▼. Hagley Hagley, out to three catches, allowed L. Parish, of Christchurch, to third base on errors and she scored the only run ot the innings on a hit by K. McCormick. A force out and a double play between J. Irving and T. Tukon closed the innings. With Hagley’s first two batters struck out, L. Honeyman drove the ball hard causing an error, but in spite of a good hit by B. Clark the Innings was scoreless. Christchurch was out to the same call and Hagley, forcing Christchurch into errors, scored two runs. However, with two and three base hits by H. Johnson, two hits by J. Hudson and hits by J. Phillips and I. Dailey, Christchurch completely upset Hagley to score nine runs. Hagley, three up. three down in the fourth innings, held Christchurch to two runs and then hits by T. Tukon and J. Timms were instrumental in scoring two runs for Hagley. Christchurch, scoreless in Its fifth innings, held Hagley three up, three down, and in reply forced a disrupted Hagley team into errors to add two runs to its total. . At its last turn to bat. Hagley was 10 runs behind, and in spite of hits by T. Tukon and V. Gibson, the side failed, for Christchurch to win, 14-4, without batting its last innings. J. Hudson pitched well for Christchurch, gaining four strike outs, giving up five hits and conceding two walks. Box score:— Christchurch: 1,0, 9. 2,0, 2—14. Hagley: 0,0, 2,0, 2.0, 0,-4. Monowai A v. Kaiapoi Strong batting by J. Batie, of Monowai. and a two-base hit by J. Scott enabled the side to score two runs, and Kaiapoi was held to two strike outs and a force out. Monowai. with a three-base hit by L. Leask and a hit by C. Brown, saw four runners score. In spite of a hit failed Gre * n ’ «3»U> L. Leask brought about Monowai’s only run in the next innings with a good hit and Kaiapoi was held, three up, three down. C. O’Byrne hit well for Monowai in its next innings and some shaky fielding allowed two runners to cross the home plate. Kaiapoi loaded the bases with hits from S. Hudson and M. Wright in reply, but with one player dismissed. saw its next two batters out to a catch and strike out. B Makinson and L. Alston batted well ljc> r Monowai but failed to score, being out to two catches and a strike out. Kaiapoi. three up. three down in reply, held Monowai to the same count in the sixth innings and in spite ot stronger batting and with bases loaded, MraSwri. innings, held Kaiapoi, three up. three down, to gam a shut out win. 9-0. Both pitchers displayed good control, B. Makinson gaining six strike outs and J. Kimber two. Neither coneeded a walk. Box score:— Monowai: 3, 4. L 2. O, 0, o—9 Kaiapoi: 0. 0, O. 0. 0. 0. o—o.
