Senior Mixed Begins
j When the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior mixed competition began at the United Club’s courts on Saturday morning it was on I a different.system to lasit seaI son. Men’s doubles, women’s doubles and four mixed doubles to nine-up were played instead of men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles. | There are only five teams | in the competition, so there were only two contests, | Cashmere II having the bye 1 Cashmere I beat last season’s winner, University by 6 matches to 0, and North Lin-wood-Avonside beat Elm-wood-Shirley by 4 matches to 2 Cashmere, with an experienced team, was much too strong for University. M. C. Healey played a sound allcourt game and R. M. Minson was serving especially well. Miss K. Williams was strong at net and Miss J. Davidson was volleying well. The two University men, D. Henderson and D Marshall, made many errors. Henderson, who is a competent player at his best, served four double faults in one of his matches and then aced Miss Davidson twice in his next; service game. The North Linwood-Avon-side and Elmwood-Shirley encounter was a miieh more even one and the standard of tennis was better. W. Thom, who led the winning team, was in better form than he has been lately and he was well supported by J. Duggan’s returning ability. Mesdatnes D. McKinnel and B. Leopold made a good doubles combination for North Linwood-Avonside but Mrs Leopold tired towards the end of the mixed doubles. Results:— Cashmere v. University Men’s Doubles.—M. C. Healey and R. M. Minson beat D. Marshall and D. Henderson. 6-1, 6-1. Women’s Doubles. —Misses J. Davidson and K. Williams beat Misses J. Mollison and L. Tucker. 6-2. 6-4. Mixed Doubles,—Healey and Miss Davidson beat Marshall and Miss Mollison, 9-1; Minson and Miss Williams beat Henderson and Miss Tucker, 9-1: Healey and Mies Davidson beat Henderson and Miss Tucker. 9-4; Minson and Miss Williams beat Marshall and Miss Mollison. 9-5. Cashmere won by 6 matches to 9. North Unwoed-Avonside v. Elsnwuod-Shirley Men’s Doubles.—B. Crawford and R. Watson lost to W. Thom and 3. Duggan, 2-6, 6-2, 5-1. Women’s Doubles —Mesdames D. McKinnel and B. Leopold beat Misses 3. Hatch and J. Cusdin 6-0. 9-7. Mixed Doubles.—Crawford and Mrs McKinnel lost to Thom and Miss Harper. 6-9; Watson and Mrs Leopold lost to Duggan and Miss Cusdin 8-9: Crawford and Mr s McKinnel! beat Duggan and Miss Cusdin. 9-4; Watson and Mrs Leopold lost to Thom and Miss Hatch, 6-9. Elmwood-Shirley won by 4 matches to 2.
