LAWN TENNIS Canterbury Girls Beat West Coast

The Canterbury junior girls’ tennis team was much too strong for the West Coast team when they met in a Howe Shield match at Wilding Park on Saturday. Canterbury won by nine matches to one. losing only one Except for the top player, Miss E. Ogilvie, who as well as being top junior girt for West Coast is also top woman, and the third player, Miss J. Sadler, in one ot her matches, the West Coast players were all outclassed in their singles. Miss Ogilvie won the only match for West Coast when she beat Miss H. Brace, the second Canterbury player, in the first round of singles. Quite the outstanding player in the Canterbury team was Miss C. Andrew, who won both her singles with the loss of only two games. Other teams in the zone are Otago, North Otago and South Canterbury, The Canterbury team wil] now meet North Otago in the zone matches proper at Timaru next week-end and if it wins that it will meet the winner of the Otago-South Canterbury match. The winner of the zone will compete in the -emi-fmals before the New Zealand junior championships at Auckland in January. Miss Ogilvie has impressed when she has been a visitor o Christchurch for tournaments in the past. On Saturday she beat the second Canerbury player. Miss Bruce, of Ashburton, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and then took .the top Canterbury player, Miss D. Smith, to three hard sets n the second round. Miss Smith won, 4-6, 12-10, 6-3. Miss Ogilvie has good strokes and she uses all the court, not being afraid to make some sorties to the net But her game sometimes suffers when she tries to play too carefully and loses pace She was hitting the ball hard enough in her match with Miss Bruce in the morning, but in tire afternoon against Miss Smith she was sometimes just patting the bail over, clearing the net by several feet.

Mias Smith is a strong driver on both sides and although she lost the first set and was down in the second, her deep ground shots down foe sidelines to the comers eventually scored , for r hes arwjin&iss s not upset her demeanour but must have affected her game. Like Miss Smith. Miss Bruce is a strong driver but was not strong enough to K.S, ond round she beat Miss P Moffitt, «-l, 6-0 Brilliant Form Miss Andrew was in brilliant form. She beat Miss M Garth. 6-1, 6*l, and then Mis’ J. Sadler, 6-0, 6-0. Her service was particularly swifand brought her Several aces: her ground shots were deet and hard. However, it was little won der that Miss Sadler provided little opposition be cause she had already had t three and a half hour mate! with the fourth Canterbury player. Miss S. Mac Neil! Miss Mac Neil!, aged 15. won 14-12, 1-6, 9-7, by her deter mination and inteiligen placements. Later she bea the fourth West Coast player Miss J. Garth. Neither of the players whe took part in the marathor ■ singles, Miss Mac Neill nos ' Miss Sadler, was able to ' play in the doubles so West 1 Coast played its reserve. Miss 1 J. Macduff, and Canterbury 1 played Miss J. Coombs. Canterbury won both matches. Results (Canterbury names - first):— , Singles.—H. Bruce lost to E. Ogilvie. 4-6. 3-6: D. Smith beat P.
