HOTEL MAY BE HOSTEL
Negotiations By University "The Press" Special Service KUCKIANT). Nov. 26. The seven-storey TransTasman Hotel buildmg—at present being converted into an office block—is being considered by the University of Auckland as a student hostel. Negotiations for the purchase of the building have taken place between the owners, New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., and the university council. The building was abandoned as a hotel in 1090 when structural weaknesses were discovered in preparations for remodelling. A contract tor £90.000 to strengthen the building with new steel framework was let in May and is expected to be finished before Christmas. The weight of the building was to be reduced 20 per cent, during the alterations by replacing heavy partitions with light materials.
