OPENING OF CENTRE
South Brighton Ceremony South Brighton's £90(10 community centre in Pleasant Point Domain was officially opened by Mr J Mathison, member of Parliament for Avon on Saturday. First suggested in 1956. the building had been completed in a “remarkably short time." Mr Mathison said. When he had heard about the project he thought: “They are pretty game in South Brighton to attempt to erect a community centre. “The district owes a great debt of gratitude to the volunitary workers Some of them gave up their annual holidays to work here,” he aaid. Mr Mathison suggested a plaque to commemorate the names of the workers. About 120 attended the official opening. Among guests was the Christchurch City Council's Director of Parka and Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin). Presiding at the opening was Mr I. C. Fulford, J.P.. a member of the South Brighton Community Centre Committee. The committee's president (Mr W. J. O'Brien) also spoke. “B it had not been for the residents of the district we would not have this building today.” Mr Fulford said. “The committee raised something like £4OOO to £sooo—end I think we flogged the residents of South Brighton for most of that."
