Stag Shot At Weedons

A full-grown stag with antlers in velvet was shot by a Weedons farmer, Mr N. M. Watson, on a grass road about 15 miles from Christchurch on Saturday morning. The stag first appeared out of a wheat field as Mr Watson was operating a tractor in a nearby paddock. No rifle was available, so he chased the stag for about a mile along fence lines, through a plantation and an orchard. Mr Watson brought the stag down with a 6-gauge charge at about 30 yards, after lying in wait for it as it crossed the road. Mr Watson said he had been on the farm for 14 years and this was the first occasion he had seen a stag on the property. He was not sure what bad brought it out of cover, but thought it may have been chased by other Mags. It could have come out of bush 50 miles away. Of o-tt of the Waimakariri
