New B.M.C. Technical Director
The British Motor Corporation has announced that Mr A. Issigonis, the designer of both the Morris Minor and the B.M.C. “Mini” cars, has been appointed technical director of the Corporation. He has also been appointed to the board of the Austin Motor Company. Mr Issigonis, who is 55, was: born in Smyrna, where his father had a ship building business. He was educated in London where he took the Battersea Polytechnic Engineering Diploma and in 1933 began his career in the motor industry as a draughtsman at Humber Ltd. In 1936 he joined the Morris Motors Ltd., as a suspension engineer, and it was with this firm in 1948 that he designed the Morris Minor. Soon after this he was appointed chief engineer of Morris Motors and in 1957 was appointed deputy engineering co-ordinator and chief engineer of the British Motor Corporation.
