PLOUGHING ON SUNDAY
World Match Situation Because part of the world ploughing match held recently in France was on a Sunday Holland did not take part in the final and ploughmen from Northern Ireland ploughed on only one day, said Mr J. S. Marshall, jun„ of Waianiwa, Southland, in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Marshall accompanied the New Zealand competitor, Mr H. A. Magson, of Rokeby, to the match.
Mr Marshall said that Holland, which would have had two ploughmen at the match like Northern Ireland, had made known its withdrawal in plenty of time so that the host country knew in advance that it would not be taking part. The two Northern Ireland competitors had. however, ploughed on the first day but withdrawn on the second day. It was the decision of the World Ploughing Organisation, he said, that it was the prerogative of the host country—in this case France —to hold the match on the days that it selected. In the next few years, however, with the countries holding the match there was very little possibility of the same circumstances arising at ploughing would not be held on a Sunday.
