Sewage Disposal
Sir,—The Waimairi County Council intends allowing a group of builders to discharge effluent from a private sewage plant serving some 90 sections into a stormwater drdin. This drain is very often overtaxed and in wet seasons our properties are inundated. Besides this, the drain will be polluted from behind St. Bede’s to its entry pf the river Avon and become a breeding ground for flies and a menace to health. In this district we have enough of overflowing septic tanks and stagnant stormwater, which is a disgrace to the council and the Drainage Board, which collects rates to provide this sanitary service.—Yours, etc, PAPANUI CITIZEN. October 3, 1961. [The-county cleric of the Waimairi County Council (Mr K. Maclaehlan) said: “The council had very carefully and fully investigated the installation of the proposed plant, and from the expert evidence and assurances received, in particular from the Medical Officer of Health, the residents are assured that no public nuisance or danger to health will arise from the operation of the plant. Furthermore, the council is further assured that the effluent from Kruse’s drain will have no effect on pollution in the lower Waimakariri.”]
