State House Rents
Sir.—lt is time these unrealistic arguments about State house rents came to an end. After listening to a professional economist talking about this country’s economy, it is quite clear that we Cannot go on building or maintaining a vast number of uneconomic homes for people well able to afford an extra 10s a week. The trouble is some are not prepared to go without cigarettes, beer, or TA.B, and yet expect a home at the expense of someone, not so well off, who is struggling to .provide his own home and support a family. This country needs a leader strong enough to put it on its feet financially, and, more important, the backing of the community, however distasteful the measures he adopts. I suggest a levy of 2s 6d on every social security prescription too.—Yours, etc., HOMO SAPIENS. October 11, 1961.
