Magistrate’s Court DISQUALIFIED DRIVER GAOLED FOR 28 DAYS

“For one so young you have a dreadful list ot offences,” said Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when he sentenced Henare Taurimu Baker, aged 21, a machine operator, to 28 days’ imprisonment, and disqualified him from driving for a further year, on a charge of driving while disqualified at Hamner Springs on July 20. Baker (Mr R. W. Edgley) was also fined £lO on each charge of supplying incorrect particulars on an application for a driver's licence and applying for and obtaining a driver's licence while disqualified. Pleas of guilty were entered on all charges. Mr Edgley said the accused’s probation report admittedly did not make good reading, but over the iast few months he had been working steadily and had kept out of trouble until the present lapse. The accused earned £45 a fortnight and sent £lO a fortnight to help to support several members of his family in Gisborne. Mr Edgley said. He said he could only ask for a reduction of the prison sentence so that Baker’s family would not suffer by losing his support. Adanis, aged 19. and Doug-1 las Richard Tranter, aged 17 (Mr M. P. Joyce), pleaded guilty, and were remanded on bail to October 19 for sentence. Sergeant V. F. Townshend said the accused decided to break and enter the shop to obtain clothing. Hovell stayed in the car outside as a look-out, while Adams and Tranter made an unsuccessful attempt to open a door and a window at the rear of the premises. TWO YEARS’ GAOL Two years’ imprisonment was imposed on Robert Gerald Hirini, aged 23. when he appeared for sentence on a charge of counting - house breaking and theft at Christchurch on September 19. The Magistrate said that the Court must take into account the prevalence in Christchurch of this type of offence and discourage others. “It seems the accused has got to learn the hard way,” he said. THEFT OF 9JD “The accused is the only candidate and must be elected unopposed,” the Magistrate said, when convicting Bryan Leslie Bishop, aged 20, a labourer, of theft of 9jd from a milk bottle on October 10. Bishop, who pleaded not guilty, was fined £5. Trevor John Keith Simpson, a taxi proprietor, said he was standing near the window of his house at 1.15 a.m. when he heard money being taken from a milk bottle at the side of his drive. He went into the street, saw the accused, and gave chase. The accused was the only person about at the time. Bishop, in evidence, denied having taken the money from the milk bottle. OBSTRUCTED FOOTPATH Mitchell Sloan, aged 17, was fined £5 when he appeared for sentence on a charge of obstructing the footpath on October 4. Mr P. G. S. Penlington. who appeared for the accused, said the offence was technical, and accused now realised the foolishness of his action. “Your behaviour that night was nothing less than childish,” said the Magistrate. DEPARTED FROM PERMIT On a charge brought by the Christchurch City Council of departing from permit specifications in erecting a factory, Malcolm Robert Hamilton, a builder (Mr A. F. Wilding), was convicted and fined £5. The Magistrate said that it was clear that Hamilton had not done all the work, but his foreman had done a certain amount of the supervision. He said that in fixing the penalty- he had taken into account the fact that a considerable amount of the building had been done by toe owner and not by Hamilton. ARSON CHARGE Wiiliam John James Miliar, aged 21, a driver (Mr M. G. L Loughnan), was remanded on bail after he elected trial by jury on a charge ot arson on September 9 and a charge of theft of a piano accordion, valued at £32, by failing to account, on July 20. LIQUOR AT DANCE On a charge ot having liquor near a dance at Doyleaton on September 2, Leslie Gay, aged 33. was fined £3. iftaittuK act Peter William Stanislaus Rush Jobeon, who pleaded guilty to a charge of committing an indecent act on IJuly 8. was remanded until October 19 for sentence. GAMING OFFENCES On separate charges of being found in a common gaming house in Portland street, Woolston, about 10.15 p.m. on August 8, Charlie Tahuri and Arthur Ernest Brown were each fined £3. They both pleaded guilty. On a charge of displaying an invitation to share in lotteries. Fifth Avenue, Ltd., was convicted and fined £4. FAILED TO RETURN ARMY CLOTHING On charges of failing to return Army clothing. Brian Michael Peter Scrivener was fined £3 and ordered to make restitution of £5 9s 8d; Jack John Beubby Ateroa Pirimona was convicted and discharged, and ordered to make restitution of £l2 Os sd; James Ellis Peter was fined £3; and Daniel Coe was fined £5 and ordered to make restitution of £l2 0s sd. REMANDED On charges of false pretences at Christchurch on October 2, and using obscene language in Manchester street on October 6, Stanley Alfred Allen Mclntosh, aged 25 (Mr M. G. L. Loughnan), was remanded on bail to October 26. Murray Edward Moore, aged 22, was remanded on bail until October 19 on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond on October 9. lan Harold Pattison, aged 28, was remanded until October 19 on a charge of theft of a car radio valued at £2O on September 29 Bail was allowed. On a charge of false pretences, Leslie John Keeley, aged 22, was remanded in custody until October 26. Peter John Joseph Turner, aged 18, was remanded on bail to October 26 on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge at Christchurch on October 3.
