MOVE TO SAVE LONDON LANDMARK.—The Victorian Society has launched an appeal to save the Doric Arch at Euston Station. The Ministry of Transport intends to remove it—if necessary by demolition—under improvement schemes for the railway station. The Ancient Monuments Society has offered to re-erect it on a site in Cheshire. The Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) has ordered the demolition to be delayed after the appeal by Che Victorian Society. A Canadian firm could move the arch on “skates” at a cost of £90,000. Described as an “outstanding symbol of the railway age,” the arch is surrounded by scaffolding.
