GYMNASIUM OPENED

No school had ever before opened a gymnasium, built by voluntary labour, in the first five years of its life, said Mr T. Archer, the District Superintendent of Education, at the official opening of the Shirley Boys’ High School gymnasium yesterday afternoon. Mr Archer congratulated the school on its energy and enterprise in constructing the £ 14,000 gymnasium, which includes.2ooo sq. ft of changing room, kitchen and storage space, opening on to the swimming pool and tennis courts. Other at the ceremony, held in the assembly hall, were Mrs I* Hartley, chairman of the board of governors, and Mr D. L. Drummond, president of the parent-teacher association. The gymnasium was officially opened by Mrs W. Cole, wife of the chairman of the gymnasium works committee, and parents and friends were entertained by a gymnastic display by the pupils. The swimming baths, which were built by voluntary labqur, were also opened officially yesterday, although they have been in use for two years.
