Cycling SOUTHLAND TOUR
First Stage To R. Thompson
-(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Oct, 12. R. Thompson, a 21-year-old Wellington rider, confirmed his 100-mile New Zealand road title win when he cleared the field and won the first stage of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club’s three-day Tour of Southland, from G. Lankow, who finished about 200 yards behind him. Thompson’s effort was brilliant. He covered the 85-mile course, Invercargill to Tuatapere, via Winton, Wallacetown, Wright’s Bush, Riverton and Orepuki in 3.23.58. Thompson rode aggressively over most of the journey, particularly in the “horror” section—l2 miles of gravel from Colac Bay to near Tuatapere. and looked a winner near the finish. With four miles to go he drew away. The race favourite. W. Dalton, finished fourth just behind J. Holloway. Dalton was not of his best and appeared jaded after his extensive overseas tour. Lankow also impressed; was also aggressive and may be the biggest danger to Thompson over the next two stages.
