HAWKES BAY ASPARAGUS
Bid To Capture Auckland Sales
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 12. Hawke's Bay asparagus growers appear to be attempting to capture the Auckland market and to provide themselves with an alternative outlet instead of selling mainly to their local canning factory. They also seem to be trying to popularise asparagus as a vegetable, rather than a salad delicacy, by sending supplies to city market auctions in bulk lots instead of the customary bundles used by Bay of Plenty growers. The Hawke’s Bay product has been arriving in Auckland in top condition after being carried -in refrigerated trucks. Monday’s offering was about 250 cases, but today the quantity was smaller because of lower prices.
