BLUE SLIP ON MOVE AGAIN

“Unlikely To Cause Much Trouble”

The Blue Slip north of Kaikoura, which moved lOin last week, narrowing the width of the road between Kaikoura and Blenheim, moved another sin this week. The resident engineer of the .Ministry of Works in Christchurch (Mr A. M. Peart) said yesterday that the latest movement had pushed more mud on to the road, and now men were excavating part of the hill behind the road to stop more mud moving down. The slip, a large tongue of bentonite clay which fills a chasm between hills of hard rock, becomes viscous when heavy rain falls. In the present movement it is only the top of the tongue of clay which has begun to move. Mr Peart said the last movement, which occurred about five years ago, blocked the road, but the present movement did not appear to be likely to cause much trouble. The stone gabions which held the clay back from the road had been pushed out on to the road. These would have to be replaced further back into the hill after excavations had been carried out.
